Thanks for your lengthy comment on my post. About the cost of the meal: It was a buffet dinner with many, many varieties, to go and get as much as you want. It cost 1'300 rupies which is around 11 dollars. With the beer. Here, in Vavuniya, I eat at a local place (rice, not spicy, with chicken and beans) for 2 dollars, a 1.5 liter bottle of water included.
About the UN-card. I hate them. And I don't wear it around my neck. It is in my pocket. I have to take it off anyway to show it to the watchdog of an agency I am visiting.
But there is guys who are really proud to have a UN card. It was like this in Kosovo, it was like this in Sudan and it is like this in Sri Lanka. You see them at Geneva, Zurich or Frankfurt (and many others) airport, walking around with stiff necks and have the card around their neck, thinking that it will impress people. Which of course, it does not. And then, in Sri Lanka right now, UN does not have much sympathy.
